DeBoom Racing Updates

Monday, June 28th, 2010

A handful of DeBoom Coaching Athletes performed over the weekend and we wanted to give a shout out to them.

Congrats to Raul Tejada who didn’t just win his age group at Ironman 70.3 Buffalo Springs Lake, but destroyed the field. Raul qualifed for his first ever Ironman World Championships in Kona this October – see ya in October Raul. Nicely done. Raul’s splits are below – notable, is his 5 min drop in his swim time from his last half ironman effort in Florida – hard work paying off!

Also, congrats to AG Giles, who joined a very elite club over the weekend as he completed Ironman France. Congrats AG, all the sacrifice was worth it. Only you and I know just how much it took to get you there. Job well done. Waiting on photos. You accomplished the most important goals of the first Ironman – Having fun and finishing – great Job.

Finally, congrats to professional, Nick Vandam, who earned valuable points at the Coteau-du-Lac ITU event in Canada over the weekend. Nick placed 9th in a professional field of over 70 athletes. This event also acted as the Under 23 World Championships Qualifier event, which Nick qualified for the second straight year. Under 23 World Championships are in Budapest this Septemer. This is all the more impressive since Nick is also a lieutenant in the US Army during the weekdays. Nick spent his free time this weekend studying for a test and will be back at officer training on Monday. In a few week’s time however, Nick will get a chance at living the dream, as the US Army has selected Nick to join the WCAP (World Class Athlete Program) in Colorado Springs, CO.

DeBoom Animal of the Month – April

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

The race season is in full bloom and many athletes have been toeing the line lately, but we have to recognize the amazing performance of the entire West Point Tri Team at the Collegiate Triathlon and Duathlon National Championships. National Champion Women, National Runner-Up Men at Tri Nat’s and both teams National Champs at Duathlon Nationals. In a sport where it’s hard enough to race well individually, the entire team rose to the occasion and achieved a goal that they trained long and hard for. Congrats to the West Point Tri Team – April Animal of the Month.

West Point Headed Towards Another National Title

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Looks like another dominating performance by the West Point Triathlon Team at the National Duathlon Championships in Richmond today. No official word as of yet, but it looks like another National Title for the team in just over a week (USMA women won a collegiate triathlon national title last week and the USMA Men were National Runner-Ups).

Young upstart Raul Tejada blitzed the field in New Orleans this morning, winning the 20-24 Men’s overall with a fast 4:16 over a stacked field. The former professional motocross rider used a steady attack to win by a 2 min margin. This victory qualifies Raul for the 70.3 World Champs this fall. Next up for Raul is a taste of the altitude as he embarks on his first Boulder Training Camp. This camp should send Raul into the next stratosphere.

Nice Article About Army Star Triathlete – Ashley Morgan

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The following article on Ashley Morgan, a member of the Army cross country team, orginally appeared here on USATriathlon.org on April 15, 2010.

Collegiate Competitor Puts Country First

Hundreds of collegiate triathletes head to Lubbock, Texas, this weekend for the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship hoping to win an individual or team title. For some, success in triathlon may translate into a professional career in the sport, with a chance of making an Olympic team someday. For others, there are dreams that outweigh Olympic opportunity.

Ashley Morgan has competed at Collegiate Nationals before. Last year, she finished second and went on to win her age group at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Clearwater. For four years, Ashley has been a member of the triathlon team at the U.S. Military Academy and has qualified for the World Class Athlete Program, a program that offers members of the military support and training in athletic endeavors.

The WCAP is an elite program, with unique qualifying standards in more than 20 sports, and gives soldiers the opportunity to prepare for national and international competitions, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games, while remaining military professionals.

Although Ashley is considered a prime candidate for the WCAP, she is opting to continue her journey with the Army. She will begin serving active duty after she graduates from West Point this spring.

Ashley shared with USA Triathlon why she feels compelled to serve in the Army, despite a love for triathlon:

“I have met the qualifying standards (for the WCAP) each year for the past four years, so I do have the opportunity to go ahead and apply to be accepted to train for (a chance at) the Olympics. This was one of the hardest, most unexpected, decisions of my life. I think it is not uncommon when I admit to dreaming of going to the Olympics when I was little, but now that I get here and this opportunity that I never thought would actually exist is right here before me, I am realizing that it would not mean as much to me in the place where I am in my life as I once thought it would.

When I was recruited to run for West Point, I knew there were a lot of other schools I could go to if my sole focus was to be the best runner I wanted to be – places where I could chose my own meals, select my class schedules, stay off my feet more when I wasn’t training and get more hours of sleep. I came here initially because I was attracted to the challenge and wanted to learn how to be a leader in the army. The real reason I stayed was because I loved the people and really want to serve.

I absolutely love triathlon, and, if you ask anybody, they would tell you I am extremely passionate about it. That said, besides triathlon, I’ve spent four years doing everything I can to learn how to be the best officer I can be, and the army is where I feel led to serve right now. Nicholas Vandam, one of the most driven triathletes I know and West Point grad of 2009, has recently reached his goal of being accepted in WCAP and will be training out in Colorado very soon. For Nick, he chose a different path (WCAP) to represent the U.S. and the Army through triathlon because this is where his heart and desire is right now and I can’t express enough how proud of him for reaching this goal!
This is one of those choices in my life that I just had to pray about and give it up to God because I felt very much supported in either path I chose by my teammates, mentors and family. My fiancĂ©, who is currently an infantry officer deployed with the 82nd Airborne to Iraq, told me that this was a decision I had to make on my own because he wanted me to make the right decision for me, and he supports me either way which I am incredibly grateful for!”

Congrats to DeBoom Athlete, Jeff Peterson

Jeff and Ramsey Peterson

DeBoom Athlete, Jeff Peterson finished his first half ironman yesterday where he finished as the second amateur overall. To add to the challenge yesterday, Jeff thought it would be nice to give himself a handicap by getting “bumped” by a car the day before the event. Bruised and battered, Jeff still toed the line the next morning and raced to a solid 2nd overall showing in the amateur field.

Jeff and his wife Clara run a very cool website – Run Ramsey – consider it a facebook for endurance athletes. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s definitely worth checking out and joining the gang over there. Here’s a quick shot of Jeff’s splits from the Ironman 70.3 California yesterday.

DeBoom Animal of the Month – March

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

We’re adding a new segment to the DeBoom Coaching Blog – the Animal of the Month. This will allow us to recognize standout performances from DeBoom Athletes over the course of the season. Simply put, we’re looking for those performances where a new level of pain or mental tenacity was achieved. There’s alot of racing to come in 2010, so there’s a good chance this will become Animal of the Week, but for now, we’re going with the full Month. Check the blog sidebar for the latest DeBoom Animal of the Month also.

Our first winner (winner of what you ask? – we’re not sure yet, but we’re working on that!) is First Class Cadet, Rob Sherry of the West Point Triathlon Team. With a Prefontaine-esque approach, Rob attacked his first race of the year – The Miami International Triathlon with a go-for-broke style and left it all out on the course. He imploded with a couple of miles to go, but it was spectacular none the less, and when Rob rests up for the Big One in Lubbock, TX next month, he’s got a shot at pulling out something special.

Congrats Rob and keep up the great work!
